Both are major Southeast Asian gateways, but they could hardly feel more different. One is sensory overload at bargain prices; the other is one of the most orderly, comfortable cities on earth.
The vibe
Bangkok is loud, fast and endlessly stimulating — tuk-tuks, street food, golden temples and rooftop bars. Singapore is clean, green and effortless: gleaming architecture, hawker centres, and everything works. First-timers and families often find Singapore the gentler introduction to Asia; Bangkok rewards those who like a bit of chaos.
Cost
Bangkok is significantly cheaper for food, transport and hotels. Singapore is one of the pricier cities in the region — though its hawker centres keep eating genuinely affordable.
Things to do
- Bangkok: the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun, floating markets, street-food crawls and Chatuchak weekend market.
- Singapore: Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay Sands, Sentosa, and the food streets of Chinatown and Little India.
Getting around
Singapore's MRT is spotless and simple. Bangkok's BTS Skytrain and metro are excellent too, but traffic above ground can be brutal — plan around it.
The verdict
Choose Bangkok for energy, food and value; choose Singapore for ease, families and a soft landing in Asia. Many travellers do both on one trip — they are a short flight apart. Begin with our Bangkok travel guide.
