Kyoto vs Tokyo: Which Should You Visit First?

Old Japan or new? The two cities are a perfect pair — but if you must choose…

Tokyo and Kyoto are the two poles of a Japan trip: one the neon-lit future, the other the keeper of tradition. They are 2.5 hours apart by bullet train, but if your time is tight, here is how to decide.

Tokyo: the modern capital

Tokyo is vast, fast and exhilarating — skyscraper districts, themed cafés, world-class food at every price, and pockets of calm in its shrines and gardens. It is the better base for nightlife, shopping and day trips like Hakone and Nikko.

Kyoto: the cultural heart

Kyoto is where you go for the Japan of the imagination: thousands of temples and shrines, the geisha district of Gion, bamboo groves and exquisite gardens. It is smaller, slower and best explored on foot and by bus, ideally early in the morning before the crowds.

Which suits you?

The honest answer

Do both. The classic first trip flies into Tokyo, spends a few days, then takes the shinkansen to Kyoto (with a stop in Osaka or Nara). If you truly only have a few days, start in Tokyo — it is the easier landing — then read our Kyoto travel guide for the next leg.
